ホイットニーヒューストンさんが亡くなりましたね。
僕が昔まだまだ若くて少しアメリカに住んでたころ、
クラブに行くと、とにっかくHector Mixなり、Garcia Mixなりで、
ノリノリのハウスにアレンジした
彼女の歌がよくかかっていました。
僕も大好きなシンガーの一人でした。
追悼番組を見ていると、
栄光をつかみ、名声をほしいままにしたのは２０代だったそうで、
２９歳での結婚がターニングポイント？（という感じで少なくとも番組は構成されてた）
その後は夫からのDV、
そして薬物依存、と
転落人生を歩んだそうです。
彼女の弱さを非難する人もいるでしょうが、
こういうのは、
もう大きな渦に巻き込まれていってしまうように、
途中からは自分の意志だけではどうにもならなかったのでしょう。
可哀そうでなりません。
僕がホイットニーの曲の中でも好きな曲のひとつに
Why Does It Hurts So Bad
というものがあります。
自身も出演した映画の挿入歌か主題歌だったと思います。
この歌を歌ったときの彼女の人生が、
どのステージだったかは知らないのですが、
今聞くと、
なんかこう、よけいにグッとくるものがあります。
歌詞的には、
別れた酷い恋人のことがそれでも忘れられない、という内容なのですが、
なんとなく
彼女の現実の結婚生活と勝手にだぶらせてしまうのです。
そして
歌詞の中のYouを
「別れた恋人」ではなく
「薬物」のメタファーとして聞くとなんかこう、
必死に薬物依存を断ち切ろうとしているのに、
どうしてもまた戻ってしまう
そんな現実世界の彼女の姿がだぶってしまって、
また可哀そうになってくるのです。
薬物は
ダメ！絶対！
今はもう
現実世界の苦しさからは逃れて
安らかに眠ってくれてればいいなあと思います。
